Stripping your stairs back to the wood is the first stage. Stripped back to the wood your stairs can look beautiful, however can provide unwanted noise underfoot.

Adding a stair runner will provide the sound insulation of a standard carpet whilst leaving some of the wood visible to retain the stylish effect.

Choosing the edging for your stair runner

A common option for edging stair runners is to have them whipped. Whipping is the process of binding carpet edges to keep them looking neat, and prevent fraying.

Another option is to have the edge bound with tape. Binding with tape provides a more robust edge to the carpet and introduces an opportunity to add another element of design and individuality.
